Gapao literally translates to herb and refers to holy basil.

Gapao rice recipe

Ingredients (for 2 people)

Minced chicken: 200g
Garlic: 2 cloves (chopped)
Red chili pepper: 1-2 (adjust to taste, chopped)
Thai basil (holy basil or sweet basil): 1 cup Soy sauce: 1 tablespoon
Oyster sauce: 1 tablespoon
Sugar: 1 teaspoon
Fish sauce (nam pla): 1 teaspoon
Rice: 2 cups (warm rice is recommended)
Eggs: 2 (for fried eggs)

How to make

  1. In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, and fish sauce.
  2. Heat the oil in a frying pan and fry the garlic and red chili pepper until fragrant. Add minced chicken and fry until it changes color.
  3. Add the mixed seasonings and stir-fry to coat everything well.
  4. Lower the heat, add the Thai basil and stir-fry briefly.
  5. Make fried eggs in another frying pan. In Thailand, eggs with half-cooked yolks are preferred.
  6. Serve over warm rice and top with a fried egg to complete.
